Late last year, the Australian writer Libby Hathorn and I, worked on an article about the Evening of Keats Art and Poetry. It reflected on the event created in the Woollahra Galleries to celebrate Keats work and the 200 years since his death. Artists were asked to reflect on his poetry and create artworks from a chosen poem. The review is below published today on Australian Children's Poetry website. Enjoy.

This year I was selected again to submit a poem based on the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas for International Dylan Thomas Day 2022. My poem, In Ceremony of a Fire Raid Past, was published as part of an official and yearly event published on, Vatsala Radhakeesoon's,( poet and Artist) blog page, as part of the celebrations of Dylan Day on May 14th. I am very glad my work has been supported by Vatsala who is an artist and writer based in Mauritius. The blog and event are supported by the organisers of Dylan Day, Hannah Ellis who is the grand daughter of Dylan Thomas and Lidia Chiarelli who started the art/literary movement, Immagine and Poesia founded in Torino (Italy) in 2007, with Aeronwy Thomas, Dylan Thomas's daughter. I have included Vatsala's introduction and you can read the poems for this event on the link below. My poem is featured around No 10 in the blog. Enjoy!

A World without Light

Upon the yearning of your quietus, when
Everything passes into one moment,
And Death’s veil, absorbs the eternal space,
The poet’s soul, drifts from a long embrace,
A petal, falling from a flower’s head,
Who, forever lies lost, in destined swoon,
Cradled in the sky like the phases of the moon.

But Time transforms, bitter, immortal crown,
In marble cloak, love’s temple, is torn down,
With dark regret, her invisible words fade,
And love’s fair trust, is left in the arms of a maid.

A Raven, upon the perpetual boat,
Mournful, exhales its breath, your breath like mist,
Above the fountain, sad tidings descend,
Trice, like poor Hylas to the water nymphs,
To becalm your name, it is energy-
Like an oak.

As Spring slips between your fingers, songbirds,
Sing, to tell how the nightingale laments,
That no poetry can explain it, the
Poet who cannot love, but only be
In love with love.

But now thy name is writ in water and,
Through everlasting gaze, millenniums,
Will remember you. You, who from ancient
Day’s past, have long since evaporated,
Into this moon bather’s night, this morning,
Of the world, where there is no light.

Hi Everyone,

It has been a busy time for me getting my new novel, A Token for Perry ready to publish and launch in May this year. It has been years in the making and hopefully you can join me at the launch. (TBA). My father Malcolm Jones has again painted some fantastic works to be included in the book and these works have added great depth to the text. A Token for Perry, is a narrative work based in part, on historical facts.

During the smuggling days of Devon, Patience Perry is abandoned by his father at birth and is thrown into the world of the Brotherhood of the Axe, a secret society initiated by the Perry family of Axmouth. But Patience has a secret that even he doesn’t understand. He perseveres with endless cycles of rebirth, spanning centuries, and becomes a spectator and participant, witnessing the criminal generations of the Brotherhood and the dire consequences that arise from the crimes that they commit. Later, he is blamed and charged with smuggling and on suspicion of murder, he is transported to Australia. Confident of a new future, his hopes are dashed when his dark past follows him to the colonies. A spark of hope is ignited when he meets Zachariah Fitch and the beautiful Johanna. But first, he must endure the cruelty of his new master, Frederick Taylor, a ruthless and malicious man who will stop at nothing to consolidate his wealth and power. Love, murder, betrayal, massacre and deceit, propel Patience into a world far worse than the one he left behind.

I look forward in giving some more details about the launch in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned...

This month we had the Newcastle Writers Festival and I was invited to an editing workshop with Marion Halligan, who launched her book Goodbye Sweetheart at the festival. Marion was a wonderful inspiration and I felt very privileged to attend with 13 others from Newcastle University. Marion was a terrific editor and we all learnt something new.I highly recommend her work, she also writes for the Canberra Times. I also attended several launches and was enthralled to attend a talk by Blanche d'Alpuget and Robyn Cadwallander on writing historical fiction. But the most enjoyable was the Big Read, highlighting 7 Australian Poets who all read their work. This was really something.

I was also extremely lucky to meet with Dr Lyndall Ryan, Ann Curthoys and John Docker for lunch to discuss my project and novel, A Token for Perry. All are eminent historians and were happy to help me with further information on indigenous massacres in Western Victoria- which is part of my story.

This month I am off to Victoria to interview the grand daughter of James Dawson a monumental figure in the fight for rights and humane treatment of the the Djargurd Wurrung, the indigenous people of Western Victoria He recorded and published a book on Aboriginal Languages in that district. He is the inspiration for one of the characters in my new novel, A Token for Perry. I am touring around other parts of Victoria with my father Malcolm, to research, write and paint in the Western District.

Well happy reading and hopefully the winter months will find you curled up in front of the heater with a great book.

Another event planned on the June long weekend 6-8th at Addison Road Community Centre, Marrickville Sydney with my father Malcolm Jones and Louise Beck who are be part of the Art Market, exhibiting in the Stirrup Gallery, with an exhibition of latest works with others from the Brandling Art Society. I will be there too, performing some street theatre and poetry from the Sky Is My Religion. Poetry books will be available for sale. Look out for me dressed as a French Art Thief!! Hope to see you there.Later this year I am hoping to visit Victoria for some more research for my novel to further develop the book. It's a busy year and I hope to have some more events planned in the near future. And I hope some of you are able to join in with the Dylan Thomas 100 celebrations who is one of my greatest influences and loves. Early next year there will be a production in Sydney at the Opera House of Adventures in the Skin Trade. There has been another movie made by the BBC called, A Poet in New York and lets hope it is screened in Australia! Dylan is played by Tom Hollander and Caitlin Thomas, by our own Essie Davis. There are a few things happening in Australia over the next months to celebrate the life of Dylan, who is probably the 20th century's greatest english speaking poet.Until then happy reading. Enjoy.

A last update for 2013 so I would like to wish to extend my warmest wishes for the festive season and hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas and hoping New Year brings love, joy and success.

Back in September I wrote a short script called Anneke, The Lost Sister of Groningen to work as a companion piece with the novel. I entered it into the Tropfest competition because this year’s image was ‘change’ and I thought it would work beautifully. Unfortunately we didn’t win, (I wasn’t really expecting to) but it finally got me moving on writing this short piece as a teaser for the novel. I hope you enjoy it.

In 2014 I will be appearing at the Newcastle Writers Festival in April as a poet, not sure what I am doing yet -but stay tuned! I also am embarking on a project for my novel, A Token for Perry, at the Newcastle University starting a Higher Research Degree in Masters English Phil and if successful after twelve months will be bumped into the PHD program. So very exciting days to come!

I hope you all have a safe and Merry Christmas and enjoy a few books over the holidays, I know I will. Thank you again for supporting my work and I hope more of you get to read The Lost Sister of Groningen in the near future, if you haven’t already. Follow the link below to see the film.

Cheers

Happy New Year and hopefully this year will be a wonderful year for all members and their families. 2013 and I have been working steadily on my new novel, A Token For Perry and hopefully in a few months will have the first draft finished.

Meanwhile I wanted to let you know that there is a fantastic exhibtion on at the Maritime Museum in Sydney at Darling Harbour, called Waves of Migration. The museum requested that migrants put their stories up on the message board and share their story. And thats what I did. Anneke's story is up on the board.

You can see that at

http://wavessharing.anmm.gov.au/

Anneke is also on the Welcome Wall, and you can read her entry in the Maritime Museum's database on their website. I would highly recommend if you have a history of migration to Australia, that you add your story there, and of course go and visit the museum and and see the exhibiton yourself.

My father's garden opening is on the 16-17th February in Paddington, and I will be there with books if anyone is interested in coming. I will post this as an event shortly on this website.

Hope you enjoy and see you soon.

Hi Everyone,

Well I am back from Bali even more inspired than before! A wonderful opening and great publicity for the book launch of The Sky Is My Religion. It was really wonderful to work with the artists, dancers and musicians who worked tirelessly with me to produce a truly memorable opening! We had a lot of support from many people and I would like to thank everyone who has supported the project so far, Libby Hathorn, Bali Arts Magazine, Henny, Don Dulang, Bali TV, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Bali Navi website, Bali Taksu, Beat Magazine,Dewangga Gallery, Bali Post and all the Peliatan Troupe. The wonderful people who made this project special were the dancers and musicians from Peliatan in Ubud.Their work was outstanding and putting poetry, music, and dance together was really a great joy. Kadek Ferry, Mayumi Inouye and De Kamandanu (Made) made the performances so memorable! The artists also have beautiful work exhibited and it was very sad for me to leave the gallery after doing 9 poetry perfomances in amongst the artworks!

I hope the artist will sell their works at this outstanding exhibition and if you have not been into see it please try to if in Bali! Or pass it on if you know someone visiting, it is open until 30th October. Please take the time to look at the websites showcasing the event and check out the opening video I put up today. Further updates will follow. Please enjoy and make sure you get your copy of the poetry volume with the beautiful art work by I Wayan Meja and I Wayan Eka Partama (Gilo) you can buy it on Blurb!

I have been busy preparing for the launch of the new edition poetry volume, The Sky is My Religion, which will take place in Ubud at the Dewangga Gallery, in October 2012. I have been fortunate enough to have the cover reworked by two of my favourite painters, Wayan Meja and Eka Partama Gilo from Bali. The exhibiton is a joint collaboration between Balinese Artist and Australian Artists based on ideas and themes from the poems. It should be an exciting event. The exhibiton will be on for a month, and I will travel to Bali to perform at the exhibiton on the opening night and throughout the early weeks of October.

This is an unoffical fringe event during the Ubud Readers and Writers Festival and features both Australian and Balinese artists. I will be performing on opening night with Kadek Ferry, 15 dancers, and a gamelan orchestra! Music will be composed and played live, dancing will be co-ordinated by Mayoumi Inouye. The exhibiton has been programmed for a month, and will include an art exhibition painting, book signing sessions, workshops, talks, poetry perfomances, installations and digital film. An all round 'Art Happening' ! The Exhibitors include quite a line up of celebrated artists from Bali and Australia, painters Wayan Meja, Malcolm Jones, Eka Partama Gilo, and Gusti Putu Seteja, grandson of I Gusti Nyomen Lempad, Mega Sari, and sculptor Wayan Wina.

Designers Agus Astradahi and Caity Orlena will also be exhibiting and designing concepts, including costume.

The Exhibition will be opened by Australian writer and poet, Libby Hathorn National Ambassador for the Australian National Year Of Reading, and participant in 2012, of the Ubud Readers and Writers Festival. In the true spirit of collaboration, Desak Made Yuniantari, Program Officer, for Indonesian Language Services at the Indonesian Australian Language Foundation, Denpasar will MC!

I am very excited about this launch, and as a poet it is really wonderful to inspire others and be given the chance to work so closely with other artists during such a festive time in Ubud!

Hopefully the new editon volume of The Sky Is My Religion will be a success.

This was an amazing experience for anyone who was involved. I was able to collaborate with Dewa Atra and perform several of my poems with him. A different costume was created with every poem! It was a wonderful working in the head space of two cultures. Culminating in performance of both contemporary and traditional Balinese dance, with the poems read and performed from the Sky Is My Religion. We performed The Sky Is Broken at the opening of the Bali Exhibition at Newcastle Art Space, Blazing Star at both the Lass O Gowrie Hotel, in Newcastle and at an opening of Barbara Nanshe’s Art/Jewellery Gallery in Beaumont Street, Hamilton and finally the poem, White Rose at Stockton Public School Multicultural Day. It was great opportunity for us to be invited to the Indonesian Embassy in Sydney, and truly wonderful for the artists to have the consulates visit their activities, and performance days, at Stockton and Lambton Public Schools' Multicultural Days. We are hoping to further this collaboration in Bali in the near future. It was a truly magnificent experience working with the artists, and supporting them on their cultural exchange in Newcastle. But best of all, was the much loved art exhibiton at NAS;the painting I took home with me, will certainly extend my experience into the future! Artists, Wayan Meja and Eka Partama have left some of their works in Newcastle; they can be found in the Banyan Tree Restuarant, Hamilton, and Inside Out, Newcastle. Works are for sale.

Congratulations Nell,

Set, as your book substantially is, in a time and place of particular cultural, historical and social significance, it is much more than a personal description of a significant segment of family history. Your detailed description of the varied struggles and trials of individuals in your family gives life to what is all too often an incidental reference in much literature.

Life in enemy-occupied countries was particularly horrific, as much for civilians (perhaps even more so) as for those in active combat. So much was lost (often within hours): homes, work (often replaced by forced labor), personal safely, trust in friends/neighbours, and most means of basic survival (food, clothing, heating, etc). Fear tended to dominate – socially and environmentally. Separation from spouses, and of children from parents, was endemic. The number of “illegitimate” children soared.

As appears to have been the case with some in your family, many people, being virtually destitute, ill or fearful of being arrested/deported, would place their children in orphanages, convents, or with “safer/more affluent” relatives/friends, to give the children a better chance of survival. It is very much to your family’s credit that, despite so many trials, most survived and built new lives for themselves.

As for those who succumbed, in one way or another, I would need to “walk (more than) a mile in their shoes” (and then some) before contemplating passing “judgment” on anyone who lived in such an intensely soul-destroying environment.

In both primary and secondary school, I had friends who had no knowledge of birth parents, or whose families had been fragmented. Some had come from England for “resettlement” with foster families. Others had lived all their young lives in war-riven cities. Many of them went on to become extremely successful adults. I believe that their initial recovery (physical, mental, social and emotional) was due almost entirely to their parents’ commitment, sense of hope and determination.

How proud your parents must be of you (and you of them). Your book is a wonderful, enduring tribute to them. It is rare, these days, to hear of people celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary; so, surely, the celebration of fifty years of marriage reflects great commitment, resilience and love.

Again – congratulations.

Margret Mills.
