My parents and I, with our friends, Mr & Mrs van Hoorn and their daughter, Netty, boarded the steam train, beside the harbour of Melbourne and typical of Australia, it was dark, within about 20 minutes.

From the window, I saw fires beside the track and people around. I thought the Australia must be like America, with Indians. (But it was "Empire Night.")

The train stopped at midnight. Beside a paddock.

We climbed down with our luggage and, in our case, a 14 (?) year old boy, with a torch, guided us across the fields, to the assembly hall of Bonegilla.

From there we were distributed to the ex-army huts, each with an iron bed, a chair, and a little bedside cupboard. 

My mother cried!

I have heard so many stories about how our parents cried, and wondered, what they had come to after leaving familiar shores.The amazing thing is that they stayed and made it work that in itself is a wonderful thing. It must have been incredible! This photo is so lovely and makes me feel very emotional, thankyou for adding it and being part of the journey! Nell
